Research: Improving inspection reliability through data fusion from multi-modal array inspections
University: Bristol
Sponsoring company: BAE Systems (submarines)
Background: Engineer’s diploma from Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France), October 2015. Industrial placement from 2012 to 2015 with Areva Intercontrole, a subsidiary of Areva specialized in non-destructive testing.
The objective of this project is to improve the detection and characterization capabilities for automated inspections. In previous work, multiple views of a defect have been obtained using array data and considering several propagation modes of the ultrasonic waves. In parallel, other work has demonstrated that the fusion of data from single-element probes can drastically increase the reliability of detection. The present project will develop an approach based on the data-fusion of array data using multi-views, which hopefully will lead to even more reliable automated inspections.
