Developing future leaders in NDE
Centres for Doctoral Training and Studentships
RCNDE has a long-standing commitment to nurturing new talent and supporting the development of the next generation of NDE specialists; it is one of our four strategic goals as laid out in the RCNDE Strategy for 2023-2028. In order to achieve this, RCNDE and its members have financially supported four iterations of Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), while NDEvR, the legal entity representing RCNDE’s membership, also receives Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science & Technology (ICASE) studentships from EPSRC.

News and Opportunities
To find out the latest news and doctoral studies opportunities with FIND-CDT, visit: www.find-cdt.ac.uk
FIND-CDT recruited its first cohort in 2019, and is the most recent iteration of the CDTs that RCNDE has been supporting. It is managed by six of RCNDE’s university partners and offers a mix of PhD and EngD students. As of October 2023, it has recruited its last cohort of doctoral students. For RCNDE industry members, the Centre offers unparalleled access to world-class talent at a discounted rate. For students, it offers exciting opportunities for collaborative industry-university research in advanced sensor and imaging technology, launching outstanding graduates into an engineering career.

EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantitative NDE
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantitative NDE was the FIND-CDT precursor. Starting in 2015, it was led by Imperial College and included the Universities of Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Strathclyde and Warwick. The EPSRC CDT in Quantitative NDE is now supporting its last doctoral student through the finishing stages of their programme.
What we have achieved so far
So far 66 EngD/PhD students from all cohorts, including previous EngD centres, have graduated and most of them are working in NDE related positions. Many past CDT graduates are current collaborators of RCNDE and are the best examples and advocates of doctoral training as a method of effective technology transfer into industry. RCNDE is currently in coversation with our partners about a future CDT and we hope to continue with our endeavours to nurture future talent in NDE by funding two PhD studentships per year – watch this space!
ICASE doctoral students
In recognition of RCNDE’s contribution to research, a number of ICASE vouchers for doctoral students are awarded each year to NDEvR by EPSRC. RCNDE offers the opportunity to its member organisations to host ICASE students, helping them build strong working relationships and create the basis for future collaborations. ICASE students are also invited to showcase their research at the annual CDT review day hosted by RCNDE.
In recognition of RCNDE’s contribution to research, EPSRC awards us a number of ICASE studentships each year. This is an excellent opportunity for RCNDE’s member organisations to host students, helping them to build strong working relationships and create the basis for future collaborations. ICASE students are also invited to showcase their research at the annual CDT Review Day hosted by RCNDE in April.
You can read some of the ICASE student experiences on the EPSRC webpage and in our anniversary brochure.
